A service upgrade is decided by a calculated load, not by the number of empty breaker spaces. Adding equipment consumes capacity whether or not a slot is free.

Panel upgrade or load management?

A new heat pump does not automatically require a 200-amp service. An electrician should perform the appropriate load analysis and explain whether the existing service is sufficient, targeted changes are enough, or a broader service upgrade is justified.

Avoid the handoff gap

Before signing final installation dates, identify who obtains permits, supplies disconnects, coordinates shutdowns, energizes the circuit, and confirms readiness. A missing responsibility can delay both trades.

Multiple outdoor units, one electrical plan

A multi-zone system with several outdoor units, or a whole-home system replacing baseboard heat entirely, is a materially different electrical project than a single-zone add-on — more circuits, more disconnects, and a larger total load to fit against the existing service. Plan the electrical work around the complete equipment list from the start rather than adding zones one electrical visit at a time; each additional zone added later without that shared plan risks discovering the panel or service can't accommodate it once most of the budget is already spent.
