Why old-house estimates vary
Two homes built in the same year can have very different electrical histories. One may have a newer service and partial rewiring; another may contain several generations of wiring, additions, junctions, and ungrounded circuits.
- Accessible basement, attic, chase, and wall paths
- Occupied versus vacant work
- Number of circuits and devices
- Plaster, woodwork, insulation, and finish repair
- Panel and service condition
- Temporary power and sequencing

A label or two-prong outlet is not a complete diagnosis. A provider should determine the wiring type, condition, loading, modifications, insulation contact, grounding path, and the parts of the system affected before recommending a scope.
Lead-safe work in pre-1978 properties
Electrical access can disturb painted surfaces. Vermont's Renovation, Repair, Painting and Maintenance requirements may apply to covered paid work in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. Ask how the provider determines coverage and documents lead-safe responsibilities.

Living in the house during the work
Whole-home rewiring does not always require moving out. Sequencing by room or floor, scheduling work around occupied hours, and temporary power arrangements can keep a property livable through the project, though a full renovation happening at the same time changes that calculation. Ask specifically how the contractor phases occupied work, what rooms are unusable on which days, and how overnight power and heat are maintained if a circuit serving them is mid-replacement.
