This is a decision framework, not a product review. Burlington VT Electrician does not sell, install on its own account, rate, rank or recommend Square D, Eaton and Siemens, and publishes no specifications for them. Confirm every specification, price, warranty and compatibility question with the manufacturer and with the electrician quoting the work.
What actually decides the choice
In order of how much each tends to affect the outcome for a Vermont property. Most of these are settled by the building and the electrical system rather than by the product.
- Breaker availability and cost over time — Breakers must match the panel. Long-term availability and price of the breaker line matters more than the panel itself, particularly for AFCI and GFCI types.
- Service rating, from a calculation — The rating should follow a calculated load that accounts for planned equipment, not a round number chosen by habit.
- Space for future circuits — Physical spaces are cheap now and expensive later. Ask how many usable spaces remain after the work, allowing for double-pole breakers.
- Surge protection provision — Whether whole-home surge protection is integral, added, or omitted is worth deciding at the time the panel is open.
- What else the project touches — Meter socket, service entrance, grounding, bonding and utility coordination usually dominate the cost of a panel project, whatever brand goes on the wall.
- Labelling and documentation — An accurate circuit directory and handover documentation is the part you live with. It is also frequently skipped.
Questions to put to the electrician
Give every electrician the same list, and the quotes become comparable.
- Which specific model and configuration is being quoted, and why that one for this property?
- What does the circuit or installation require, separately from the equipment price?
- What is excluded — trenching, restoration, permits, utility coordination, commissioning?
- What is the warranty on the equipment, and separately on the installation labour?
- Who services it afterwards, and what does routine servicing cost?
Where to verify the product itself
Specifications, current models, warranty terms and compatibility should come from Square D, Eaton and Siemens directly. A comparison page — including this one — is not a substitute for the manufacturer's current documentation, and any figure repeated second-hand can be out of date by the time you read it.
