What actually decides the choice
In order of how much each tends to affect the outcome for a Vermont property. Most of these are settled by the building and the electrical system rather than by the product.
- Charging rate you actually need — Overnight charging for typical daily mileage rarely needs the maximum rate. A lower amperage charger can avoid a service upgrade entirely, which usually dwarfs any price difference between units.
- Panel capacity, not free breaker spaces — A calculated load decides whether the circuit fits. An empty slot proves nothing. This is the single most common surprise in an EV charger quote.
- Hardwired or plug-in — The two are wired differently, have different requirements outdoors, and affect whether the unit can be moved or replaced easily.
- Indoor or outdoor mounting — Vermont winters make enclosure rating, cable flexibility in cold, and mounting location genuinely decisive rather than cosmetic.
- Connector and vehicle compatibility — Connector standards have been changing. Confirm current compatibility with your specific vehicle and any adapter directly with both manufacturers.
- Load management support — Where capacity is tight, approved load management can avoid a service upgrade. Not every unit supports it, and this can be the deciding factor.
- Utility programme eligibility — Some incentives require particular equipment, metering or enrolment. Confirm eligibility before purchase, with the utility that serves your address.
Questions to put to the electrician
Give every electrician the same list, and the quotes become comparable.
- Which specific model and configuration is being quoted, and why that one for this property?
- What does the circuit or installation require, separately from the equipment price?
- What is excluded — trenching, restoration, permits, utility coordination, commissioning?
- What is the warranty on the equipment, and separately on the installation labour?
- Who services it afterwards, and what does routine servicing cost?
Where to verify the product itself
Specifications, current models, warranty terms and compatibility should come from Tesla, ChargePoint, Emporia and Wallbox directly. A comparison page — including this one — is not a substitute for the manufacturer's current documentation, and any figure repeated second-hand can be out of date by the time you read it.
