Request urgent help for smoke, fire, sparks, an explosion, energized water, rapidly increasing heat, or any condition that feels immediately unsafe. Warn others and do not return for belongings.

If there is an odor but no active emergency

Stop using the affected appliance, outlet, switch, circuit, or area when this can be done without touching damaged equipment. Keep people and pets away and request prompt professional evaluation.

Do not make the condition harder to diagnose

Do not remove covers, touch wiring, repeatedly reset a breaker, spray liquids, run the equipment again to reproduce the smell, or assume the odor is harmless because it stopped.

Information to share safely

Note the room or equipment, when it began, whether power changed, what was operating, and any safely visible heat, discoloration, sound, smoke, water, storm damage, or recent work. Leave immediately if conditions worsen.

Treat it as urgent, then narrow it

A burning or fishy plastic smell near electrical equipment means something is already overheating. The first actions are to stop using the circuit, not open anything, and — if there is smoke, visible arcing, heat through a cover or scorching — leave and call emergency services. Narrowing the source comes after that, not before.

What the smell usually is

Overheating plastic from a device, terminal or conductor insulation. The commonest single cause is a loose termination heating under load. A fishy or urine-like smell is frequently associated with overheating electrical components, and it is worth taking as seriously as visible smoke.

Distinguishing electrical from other sources

New heating equipment burning off dust in autumn, a scorched item on a stove element, an overheating appliance motor, or a pet accident on a heating vent can all be mistaken for electrical. If the smell tracks to a specific outlet, switch, fixture or the panel, treat it as electrical.

What to record safely

Where the smell is strongest, when it started, which circuit or room, whether anything is warm or discoloured, whether there is buzzing or crackling, and whether it followed new equipment or building work. All of that is observable without opening anything.

Why you should not investigate inside equipment

The heat you are smelling is at a connection carrying current. Removing a cover puts you next to energised parts at exactly the point where something is already failing. There is no homeowner diagnostic step here that is worth the risk.
