Signs you can observe without opening anything
Everything worth noticing here is visible or audible from outside the panel cover. Repeated tripping, warmth felt through the cover, a buzzing or crackling sound, a burning or fishy plastic smell, visible rust or water staining, scorch marks, or breakers that will not reset firmly are all reasons to have the panel evaluated rather than lived with.
Signs that appear elsewhere in the house
A panel problem often shows up somewhere else first — lights dimming noticeably when a large appliance starts, lights brightening unusually, several circuits behaving oddly at once, or intermittent loss of power to part of the property. Those patterns point at the panel, the service or the supply rather than at any one circuit.
Age and equipment history
Age alone is not a defect, but it changes the odds. Fuse equipment, panels with no spare capacity, panels that have been added to repeatedly, and certain older panel lines with documented safety histories are all reasons for an evaluation. What an evaluation actually involves
An electrician opens the panel, checks terminations and their torque, looks for heat damage, corrosion and improper modifications, verifies grounding and bonding, confirms breaker types are correct for the panel, checks for double-tapped terminals, and performs a load calculation. The output should be a prioritised list separating safety issues from dated-but-acceptable conditions.
What not to do while you wait
Do not remove the panel cover, do not keep resetting a breaker that trips repeatedly, and do not replace a tripping breaker with a larger one. If there is smoke, arcing, heat you can feel through the cover, or a burning smell, stop using the panel and treat it as urgent.
