Vehicle and charging goals

Record the vehicle, onboard charging limit, typical daily mileage, overnight parking time, future vehicle plans, and whether charging needs to be restored quickly after long trips.

Equipment and mounting

Identify the charger model if selected, hardwired or receptacle preference, cord reach, mounting surface, indoor or outdoor exposure, snow removal, impact protection, internet or utility-program needs, and warranty requirements.

Electrical information

Share clear closed-panel photos, the service rating if known, panel location, distance to parking, finished surfaces, basement or crawlspace access, planned trenching, and other major loads. Do not remove covers for photos.

Before purchase and scheduling

Verify charger compatibility, permit responsibility, utility-program eligibility, documentation deadlines, load-management requirements, inspection, and the party responsible for configuration and app setup.

Before you choose the charger

Decide the charging rate you actually need before choosing a unit. Overnight charging for typical daily mileage rarely needs the maximum rate, and a lower-amperage charger can avoid a service upgrade entirely — a saving that dwarfs any price difference between units.

The panel comes before the product

Free breaker spaces prove nothing. A load calculation decides whether the circuit fits, and it is the single most common surprise in an EV charger quote. Have it done before the unit is bought, not after it has been delivered.

Location, and what it costs

Distance from the panel drives conductor and labour. An attached garage near the panel is a straightforward job; a detached garage across a driveway is a feeder, possibly a subpanel, and usually a trench with utility marking, inspection before backfill and reinstatement attached.

Vermont-specific considerations

Cold makes charging cables stiff and mounting height and cable routing matter more than they would elsewhere. Outdoor equipment needs enclosure ratings suited to wet, cold and sunlight, and snow clearance around a pedestal or wall unit is a real planning consideration rather than a detail.

Load management as an alternative

Where capacity is tight, approved load-management equipment can sometimes avoid a service upgrade by preventing the charger and other large loads from running simultaneously. Not every unit supports it, and it is worth pricing as an alternative rather than accepting an upgrade as inevitable.

Incentives and utility programmes

Programme requirements can dictate equipment, metering or enrolment, and they vary between the three utilities serving this region. Confirm eligibility with the utility that serves your address before purchase — afterwards is too late to change the specification.
