Collect the equipment information
Provide the model information, minimum circuit ampacity, maximum overcurrent protection, indoor/outdoor arrangement, desired locations, line-set and disconnect area, and the heat-pump contractor's contact and schedule.
Review the whole property load
The electrician evaluates the service and panel in context, including other heating equipment, water heating, cooking, drying, EV charging, hot tubs, additions, and credible future loads.
Assign the handoff
Confirm who installs the circuit and disconnect, obtains each permit, coordinates access, energizes the equipment, corrects deficiencies, and returns if inspection or commissioning identifies an issue.
Do not rely on expired incentives
Program funding and tax rules change. Verify current incentives directly with the responsible utility or program administrator before making a purchase or advertising a benefit.
Start from the equipment schedule, not the category
'A heat pump' is not a specification. The exact model sets the voltage, minimum circuit ampacity, maximum overcurrent protection, disconnect requirement and control wiring. Until the equipment is selected, electrical work can be estimated but not finalised, and quotes issued before selection routinely change.
The capacity question comes before the circuit question
A heat pump is a substantial load and rarely arrives alone — it usually comes alongside EV charging or electric water heating within a few years. Calculating those together produces one service decision instead of two, and the second one always costs more than including it in the first.
Disconnects and where they go
Outdoor units generally require a disconnecting means within sight and within a defined distance, which constrains placement and affects the route. This is a common omission in quotes and a common inspection finding when the installation was coordinated loosely.
Coordinating the trades
The electrician and the HVAC installer are doing halves of one job. Someone has to own the sequence: rough electrical, equipment set, final connection, commissioning. Where nobody owns it, the usual outcome is a return visit that somebody pays for.
Cold-climate considerations
Vermont heat pumps run hardest when it is coldest, which is also when the rest of the electrical load peaks. Backup or supplementary heat, where fitted, is frequently a large electrical load in its own right and must be in the calculation rather than treated as an afterthought.
