Equipment commonly associated with dedicated circuits

Large, fixed, continuously used, heating, cooling, cooking, charging, pumping, workshop, and manufacturer-specified equipment commonly needs its own circuit.

  • Ranges, ovens, dryers, and water heaters
  • Heat pumps and HVAC equipment
  • EV chargers and hot tubs
  • Pumps, freezers, and workshop equipment
  • Microwaves, dishwashers, disposals, and other kitchen loads as applicable

Why a spare breaker space is not the whole answer

The electrician must consider calculated service load, panel rating and condition, breaker compatibility, conductor route, voltage, amperage, disconnecting, protection, and the other loads already served.

Plan the route

Finished walls, basements, crawlspaces, attics, garages, exterior exposure, trenching, and distance can affect labor and materials. Decide who opens and repairs surfaces before approving the work.

Plan several projects together

If an EV charger, heat pump, range, dryer, water heater, hot tub, or addition is expected, disclose them together. Load management, a subpanel, service work, or a more efficient route may change the plan.

What makes a circuit dedicated

It serves one appliance or one location and nothing else. That matters because sharing a circuit with other loads is what causes nuisance tripping, dimming and — where the shared load is heavy — heat at connections that were never sized for the combination.

What usually needs one

Ranges, ovens, cooktops, dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, disposals, microwaves, air conditioners, heat pumps, EV chargers, hot tubs, well pumps, sump pumps, workshop equipment and, in many cases, refrigerators. The manufacturer's requirements decide it, not a general rule.

What decides the cost

Almost never the breaker. The run length, whether it can be fished or needs wall access, the conductor size required for the load and distance, the protection type for the location, and any restoration afterwards. A long run to a garage is a different project from a short run to an adjacent room.

When it becomes a subpanel instead

Several circuits in one area is usually a feeder and a subpanel rather than a handful of individual home runs. A workshop, a finished basement or a detached building generally crosses that line, and pricing them as individual circuits is more expensive and messier.

Sequencing with other work

If walls are open for any reason, adding circuits is dramatically cheaper. Deciding what you might want in that space in five years, while it is open, is one of the highest-return decisions in any renovation.
