What the service rating means

The service rating describes the electrical capacity available under the system design. It does not by itself tell you the panel condition, breaker space, actual calculated load, utility capacity, or whether the wiring is suitable for new equipment.

What belongs in the load picture

The evaluation can include heating and cooling equipment, water heating, cooking, clothes drying, EV charging, hot tubs, workshops, additions, batteries, and other significant loads, along with applicable demand factors.

When targeted options may help

Depending on the property and equipment, a provider may discuss a subpanel, lower configured charging power, circuit-level load management, equipment sequencing, or a full service upgrade. The appropriate option must be selected and installed for the actual application.

Plan the order of projects

Share the next several years of credible plans. It may be cheaper and less disruptive to make one coordinated decision than to reopen the service question for each appliance or vehicle.

What the amp rating actually describes

The number on the main breaker is the maximum the service equipment is built to carry, not a measure of how much you are using or how much is left. A 100-amp service running a modest load has more usable headroom than a 200-amp service already carrying electric heat, a hot tub and two EVs. The rating is one input to a calculation, not the answer to one.

Why the calculation matters more than the number

An electrician performs a load calculation that accounts for the building, its fixed appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and the loads you plan to add. That calculation — not the panel label and not the count of empty breaker spaces — determines whether the existing service supports what you want to do. It is also the document that justifies the decision to an inspector.

When 100 amps is genuinely enough

Plenty of Vermont homes run comfortably on 100 amps, particularly where heating is not electric and the appliance set is conventional. Adding a single moderate load to such a house frequently does not require a service change, and being told otherwise without a calculation is a reason to ask for one.

What usually forces the upgrade

In practice it is rarely one appliance. It is the combination — a heat pump plus EV charging plus electric water heating plus an induction range — arriving over a few years. That is why evaluating the whole electrification plan at once is cheaper than adding loads one at a time and discovering the limit at the third one.

What a service upgrade actually involves

Changing the service rating is usually more than swapping a panel. It can include the meter socket, service entrance conductors, the mast or lateral, grounding and bonding, and a utility application with a scheduled disconnect and reconnect. That is why panel-only and full-service quotes differ so much, and why they must be compared as separate things.
