Build a five-year equipment list
Include heat pumps, heat-pump water heating, EVs, cooking, dryers, hot tubs, additions, workshop equipment, solar, batteries, and generators. Record likely timing and equipment when known.

The single most expensive mistake
Adding electrification loads one at a time. Each addition is evaluated against the service in isolation, the third one exceeds it, and the service upgrade that could have been done once gets done at the least convenient moment — often with a panel that was replaced a year earlier and now has to be revisited.

Approved load-management equipment can let several large loads share a service by preventing them running simultaneously. Where the alternative is a full service upgrade, it is frequently worth pricing — and it is rarely offered unless you ask.

What to ask for in writing
A load calculation covering the full list, a recommended service size with the reasoning, a phased plan showing what to do now and what can wait, and the specific provisions being installed for future loads. That document is worth more than any individual quote.
