Document the existing system
An electrician may inspect accessible wiring types, service and panel condition, grounding, circuit layout, modifications, overload signs, device condition, and route options. A home can contain several wiring generations.
Define partial versus whole-home scope
Priorities may include active hazards, heavily loaded circuits, kitchens and baths, ungrounded areas, insurance or inspection issues, and renovation zones. Ask which areas are included and how untouched circuits are treated.
Plan access and restoration
Identify attic and basement access, plaster, historic trim, built-ins, insulation, occupied rooms, tenant coordination, furniture protection, debris, patching, painting, and who is responsible for each task.
Check lead-safe requirements

Age is not the diagnosis
A pre-1940 Vermont house is not automatically a rewire, and a 1960s house is not automatically fine. Two houses of identical age can need completely different work.
What is usually found in older Vermont homes
Knob-and-tube in the oldest stock, early two-wire cable without an equipment ground through the mid-century, cloth-insulated conductors that become brittle, and — most consequential — decades of undocumented modifications where circuits were extended by whoever was available at the time.
Partial versus whole-home
Rewiring only the circuits that fail evaluation is a legitimate and much cheaper approach, and it is often the right one. Whole-home rewiring makes sense when access is already open, when the property is empty, or when enough circuits fail that doing them individually costs more than doing them together.
Access is the real cost
The conductors are cheap. Getting them from A to B through a finished, insulated, plaster-and-lath Vermont house is not. Balloon framing can help; blown-in insulation and finished ceilings hurt. This is why the same rewire costs wildly different amounts in two similar-looking houses.
Lead-safe requirements
Disturbing painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing can bring Vermont lead-safe practice requirements into scope, which affects who can do the work, how it is contained and what it costs. Establish whether this applies before quotes are compared, because a quote that ignores it is not comparable to one that includes it.
Living through it
Rewiring an occupied house means dust, disruption, holes in walls, and rooms out of use in sequence. Ask for the sequence, the expected duration per area, and what protection and clean-down is included — those differ enormously between contractors.
